ENERGY STAR® Qualified
Our windows are all ENERGY STAR® compliant.
What does this mean to you?
|
 |
|
When you buy a window that is ENERGY STAR®
qualified, it means that you are buying the most energy
efficient windows that money can buy. Our windows had to
go through rigorous testing for thermal performance and solar
heat gain to wear the NFRC label and be ENERGY STAR®
qualified for all regions of the country.
ENERGY STAR® is a government-backed
program working to save natural resources by reducing energy
consumption. Over time, this marketing group has changed the
buying patterns of the average consumer. ENERGY STAR® labels have made consumers, and therefore
manufacturers, more conscious of energy consumption.
ENERGY STAR® mandated a minimum
standard for products to carry its label. To carry an energy star
label a window or door in our “Northern Climate” must have a
U-factor of 0.35 or less.
Hartwell Exteriors was one of the early partners to sign up for
ENERGY STAR® compliance. For us it was easy. The 1998 standards
were then and remain now, way below our own company standards!

NFRC Certified
Our Windows Are NFRC Certified.
This means they have passed very stringent testing by the National
Fenestration Rating Council in areas like heat gain and loss
through the windows. (The Door, Skylight, and
Window industry is referred as the Fenestration industry.)
|
 |
The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) is a non-profit,
public/private organization created by the window, door and skylight
industry. It is comprised of manufacturers, suppliers, builders,
architects and designers, code officials, utilities and government
agencies. NFRC is a reporting agency where manufacturers may post the performance
results of their products. The NFRC does not mandate or stipulate
standards. They do interpret results of testing done by independent
testing laboratories that perform tests as stipulated by SIGMA, IGMA,
AAMA and ASTM.
Want to know more about NFRC ratings?
NFRC ratings were created to provide uniform testing
for the industry. NFRC provides unbiased energy performance ratings
for windows, doors and skylights (or "fenestration"). Independent NFRC
ratings provide the basis for ENERGY STAR® window performance
requirements.
NFRCs labels provide product specific performance ratings for
technical qualities including the following:
-
U-Factor--the rate of heat loss from your home
through the window; the lower the number the better the rating is.
-
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC)--how much heat
your house gains from the sun as a result of the window's performance;
the lower the number on solar heat gain the better the rating is.
When your U-Factors and Solar Heat Gain Coefficients
are low and your Visible Transmittance number is high, you know you
are getting the most thermally efficient performance you can get in
your area of the country.
