ABOUT

In the next several years you are going to hear a lot about “Weatherization” and “Home Performance.” At  Hartwell Exteriors, our goal is to bring your home the benefits of modern Energy Fitness, including new levels of comfort, home health, and energy efficiency.

You may know us under our previous corporate names, including Alumabilt and its division, The Home Improvement Store. Now you will be hearing about  Hartwell ExteriHouse with vinyl siding.ors.  Why so many names, and how does it affect you, the consumer?

Our new name represents an ever evolving ability to serve you better. It’s that simple. We’ve grown, and our image in the marketplace needs to reflect new offerings and important new capabilities.

Hartwell Exteriors reflects what we’ve become, one of the most trusted sources for quality windows, doors, roofing, and vinyl siding throughout New England.

Today, the owners have put their names right on the line, for “Hartwell” is a combination of names, that of President Jim Hartley and Treasurer Ed Colwell.

These two friends have owned the company for more than a quarter century. Along the way, this family owned enterprise has grown to embrace many great employees who feel like family, including a few who are: a son, a grandson, a nephew, a son-in-law, and most recently a daughter.

To make it clearer, let’s start at the beginning and take a look at our history.

Our parent company, Alumabilt, Inc., was established in 1959 by John Marshall, a Boston University student working his way through college. Mr. Marshall started by selling aluminum storm windows to homeowners. As his reputation grew, he added aluminum siding and then aluminum replacement windows. When vinyl products came on to the market, Alumabilt began to offer them as well.

The company grew and prospered. However, by 1997 it became clear that homeowners were confused by the name “Alumabilt.” Our reputation as a reliable company had long been established, but who wanted aluminum siding? The first of our new identities was about to be born. We chose to market our services as THIS, The Home Improvement Store. The new name provided a better reflection of our commitment to overall home improvement, and no longer identified us with an outmoded style of siding.

At the same time, we were coming to the realization that our services offered more than convenience, economic efficiency, and reduced maintenance. Year after year we had been improving both our installation techniques and our selection of products. The result was that our customers’ homes were now more energy efficient.

These days, energy efficiency has a value all its own.

Upon that realization, we set out to expand these value added services. Our first steps included many hours of research, days and weeks of seminars, and contacts with industry leaders in energy efficiency. In time our efforts directed us toward a company called CanAm Building Envelope Specialists.

CanAm specializes in retrofitting commercial buildings to be more efficient with the energy they consume. They have perfected their techniques to a science, and today, CanAm offers its years of experience and materials research to benefit homes like yours. When working with residential properties, CanAm uses the identity ZeroDraft.

After completing CanAm’s training programs and working with their licensee in Upstate New York, we are proud to say we have achieved another goal. We are now licensed to use the ZeroDraft name, distribute ZeroDraft products, and have access to their expertise.

With the Help of CanAm and ZeroDraft of Central New York, we have designed a program called Energy Fitness for your home. This system is a series of steps we have added to processes already in use to improve our customer’s homes. The new system adds a level of comfort, home health and/or energy efficiency to every completed project.

And so in 2007, Alumabilt became: Hartwell Exteriors.

At the same time, we have achieved the distinction of “ZeroDraft of Boston” as a result of our dedication to energy efficiency for homeowners.

In the next several years you are going to hear a lot about “Weatherization” and “Home Performance.” But keep in mind that you heard it here first, and rest assured that  Hartwell Exteriors will not be standing by while our competition tries to catch up!

Accomplishments

Having completed over 25,000 home improvement projects since 1959, Hartwell Exteriors (formerly Alumabilt) has earned a number of accomplishments:

Selected by the Massachusetts Attorney General as authorized inspector/arbiter and contractor in 1992. Corrected the work of over 200 jobs during the program and we were used as an expert witness in workmanship issues.

Selected by Sears as the Country’s first authorized SFI contractor in 1978.  Awarded Sears’ “Contractor Excellence Award” in 1984. Finding it too expensive for our customers, we shook hands and let someone else have the contract in the late 80’s.
